SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING
Simultaneous interpreting involves real-time translation of a speaker’s words with a minimal time lag, known as décalage.
It requires at least two conference interpreters per language combination, working from a booth and alternating every 20-30 minutes.
Simultaneous interpreting is used for multilingual events with large numbers of participants, such as conferences, conventions, negotiations, cultural events or gala events.
The interpreter renders the speaker’s address virtually in real time in the relevant language.
WHISPERED INTERPRETING
Whispered interpreting (also known as chuchotage) is simultaneous interpreting delivered in a low voice into the ear of one or two participants. The interpreter sits behind them and whispers the translation of the speech in real time without disturbing other people in the room.
Whispered interpreting is typically used in bilateral contexts or during hearings.
CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETING
During consecutive interpreting, the interpreter positions themselves next to the speaker, listens, analyses and memorises what is being said, then repeats it in the target language, taking notes using a specific notation technique.
The number of interpreters needed for consecutive interpreting also depends on the level of difficulty of the content to be translated and the duration of the assignment.
Consecutive interpreting is often used for welcome speeches and toasts, business meetings, guided tours and interviews.
Consecutive interpreting approximately doubles the time needed for an event.
LIAISON INTERPRETING
In this special form of consecutive interpreting, shorter portions of speech are rendered in another language.
This interpreting technique is popular for all types of negotiations, but also for meetings, guided tours or technical sessions, e.g. when presenting new machinery, or similar events.
Liaison interpreting also takes longer.
PORTABLE INTERPRETING SYSTEMS
Interpreting with portable systems is a simultaneous interpreting technique used primarily during small workshops, less formal events and walking company tours.
Here the interpreter uses a portable interpreting or tour guide system, which consists of transmitters and receivers with earphones.
REMOTE INTERPRETING (RSI – Remote Simultaneous Interpreting)
Remote simultaneous interpreting overcomes geographical boundaries, offering an efficient, flexible and reliable service that extends the global reach of your event.
Dedicated online platforms (Zoom, Teams, etc.) allow interpreters to participate in international online or hybrid events from anywhere. This offers greater flexibility and easily adapts to different time zones and locations.
Chi siamo
Francesca Ruffo
Interpreter and translator
My Anglo-Italian heritage and three decades living in Germany give me a unique edge as a conference interpreter. I move effortlessly between cultures, picking up on the subtle cues that transform good communication into great communication. Outside the conference hall, I'll either be by the sea, working out or exploring country trails with my dog. What do clients value most about me? That I am well-prepared, precise, perceptive and discreet.
Susanna Barzanti
Interpreter and translator
Interpreting isn't just a profession I have practised for over 20 years, but a true passion that combines my love of foreign languages with my enthusiasm for travel. Where to find me? In the interpreting booth with my headphones on, at a customer site with my notepad, on a train, at the seaside, on a tennis court or playing the piano. What do they say about me? That I’m flexible, empathetic, professional and reliable.
